A-Level Computer Science (new for 2015/16) OCR Specification
Why choose OCR Computer Science?
The Computer Science specification will above all else be relevant to the modern and changing world of computing. The new specification will:
- Focus on programming, building on our GCSE Computing and emphasise the importance of computational thinking as a discipline.
- Have an expanded maths focus, much of which will be embedded within the course.
- Put computational thinking at its core, helping students to develop the skills to solve problems, design systems and understand human and machine intelligence.
- Allow student to apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real world systems in an exciting and engaging manner.
- Give students a clear progression into higher education, as the course was designed after consultation with members of BCS, CAS and top universities.
A-Level Computing(AQA, final year - examinations 2016) Specification
This extends on the GCSE. Students learn to design and implement algorithms of greater completity. They will primarily learn to use the programming language Python and VB.net. A large project is undertaken at A2 with the aim of solving a real world problem for a real user.
IGCSE Computing (Cambridge International Examinations) New 2015
Learners following the Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science syllabus develop their understanding of the main principles of problem solving using computers. They can apply their understanding to develop computer-based solutions to problems using algorithms and a high-level programming language. Learners also develop a range of technical skills, as well as being able to effectively test and evaluate computing solutions. Studying Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science will help learners appreciate current and emerging computing technologies, the benefits of their use and recognise their potential risks.
GCSE Computing(OCR) Further information (OCR examination board)
The aim of this course is to arouse the interest in pupils to be creative and solve problems using computing technology. It will also serve to bridge the gap for pupils considering A-Level Computing in the 6th form. It involves learning about computer languages. It is assessed through an exam and controlled assessment in the form of a practical investigation and a programming project.
The main language pupils will learn will be Python.

Lower School (Y1,2)
Computing as a discipline is introduced from Year 1 at King Edwards VI through Computing lessons. Pupils have the opportunity to engage outside of the curriculum in the lunchtime club innovation playground. Within the curriculum pupils will use the Scratch application developed at MIT to create video games. They will also use Lego Mindstorms NXT to work collaboratively to solve problem tasks amongst other practical and enquiry based software tools.
