Drugs, Alcohol and Smoking

Your child will probably already have heard about drug use. They may have seen drug users on TV or newspapers. As they get older and become more independent they may be offered drugs. We cannot shield them from ever having any contact but we can be well informed ourselves and encourage our children to think carefully about this.

An Independent group of parents and others, who through our different experiences are aware of the anxieties and sense of isolation, illegal drug use can cause.

Groundwork UK, The Children's Society and Fixers have jointly produced a website aimed at young people between 10 and 19 who are at risk of alcohol and drug misuse. The site has sections for under 14s, over 14s, carers and professionals. 'Fixers' are a movement of young people who campaign on issues that matter to them. Many have been through difficult times, and share their experiences and personal stories about drink drugs and crime, how they were able to take back control, and offer positive ways of dealing with them.

Catch 22 provide a service offering specialist substance misuse treatment for young people called Hampshire 24/7 (Substance Misuse Support)

General advice for young people: www.getconnected.org.uk Get Connected offers information and a free UK-wide email and telephone helpline for young people. Helpline staff have access to a comprehensive database of information about counselling and all sorts of specific services, such as drug and alcohol services or those focused on particular issues like sexuality or self harm. They will talk things through and help you find the appropriate service in your local area. Calls are free from most mobiles and they can connect you to most of the services for free too.

Addaction is a drug and alcohol service offering support for adults, young people, parents/carers and professionals; providing a free confidential specialist service specifically for young people, known as Young Addaction. Addaction runs over 120 projects around the country. The site has an online directory to enable users to search locally.

No Limits offers free and confidential information, advice, counselling, support and advocacy for children and young people under the age of 26 who live in Southampton and Hampshire. Services available include support for drug and alcohol issues and also includes advice for parents. 02380 224 224
