Initial Teacher Training

Qualified Teacher Status and PGCE while earning a salary

Award currently accredited by the University of Southampton

Training to Teach at King Edward VI School

We are a flourishing selective independent day school in the heart of Southampton with a reputation for high academic standards and extensive co-curricular opportunities.

The quality of our teaching staff is central to our success and our emphasis on professional development extends to providing support for new entrants to the profession.

Trainees are appointed on a two year fixed term contract in the first instance and would expect to be awarded QTS at the end of that period, subject to satisfactory progress as judged by the University of Southampton. We will provide guidance on the first steps in the classroom and progression towards meeting the Teaching Standards.

Our four year programme will be available to those trainees moving into a permanent position where a suitable post becomes vacant. We will lead you through the NQT year and set you on the path towards leadership roles with specific support in the fourth year. Study towards the PGCE will be possible during this time with the School contributing towards the cost.

Our programme is designed for individuals looking for a successful career in the teaching profession and we provide specific support for those with ambitions for leadership. Several current members of staff have moved into positions of responsibility following qualification and the School offers a wide range of opportunities for leadership training.

We will normally offer training places each year in particular subject areas. We also encourage applications for all teaching vacancies from good graduates looking to join the profession without teaching experience.

How to join the programme

If we have a vacancy relevant to your degree subject or teaching experience you should make an application by submitting an application form and a CV to the Head.

Otherwise you should complete a registration form and we will contact you if a suitable position becomes available. If you are still interested when we make contact you should make a formal application for the post.
