COVID Symptom Study
Throughout this pandemic, KES have tried to do our bit for the wider community. Whether it be making and distributing PPE equipment and clothing, or else helping local residents in the first lockdown to access food supplies, we are proud that we not only looked after our own community, but that we tried to do the same for others.
In the same vein, we would like to encourage our families to participate in a major new study of COVID-19 symptoms amongst young people, led by Professor Tim Spector of King’s College London, in conjunction with the health science company ZOE.
The ‘COVID Symptom Study for School Communities’ research project asks you to take a minute or so each day to record via a free app your child’s current health status, including any COVID or other symptoms they might be exhibiting. Families are linked to the school, so that localised patterns of transmission can be better understood. However, the key purpose of the research is to understand at a local, national and international level the transmission of COVID amongst children and young adults, and whether young people exhibit different COVID symptoms to adults. All data is anonymised and used purely to explore these large-scale trends.
King Edward’s has this week registered as a participant school, joining about 1000 other schools across the country in so doing, and thereby allowing any of our families who wish to join the study to link to KES through the App.
Please can I make it clear that we encourage you to participate purely so that we can all play our part in helping to understand this virus better, especially as it impacts upon children. Involvement is entirely voluntary, and registering for the study must not replace our established King Edward’s reporting systems for your child’s absence and illness. It is vital that we as a School continue to receive timely absence notifications directly from you for your child.
If you wish to participate, please go to your usual App Store to download the free ‘COVID Symptom Study’ app. Then simply sign up (QUOTING THE KES UNIQUE CODE – ‘AMARDXD’), and begin to record your child’s daily health status. The code is submitted via your child’s profile page in the App, in the ‘School Network’ section. The App includes information on how data will be stored and used, and reassurances that it is compliant with GDPR requirements. Please do not share the unique code with anybody who is not a KES parent, so that the information remains accurate to our own School community.
Thank you for your help.
