Volume 2 Issue 7

Gender Action

Stop me if you have heard this one before…

A boy and his father are taken to hospital after a serious car crash. The father sadly dies. The boy is rushed to the operating room where the surgeon says, “I can’t operate on this boy, because he is my son!” But how can this be?

Now, I hope that you will have quickly worked out that the surgeon is the boy’s mother. But please don’t feel guilty if you were thrown off by this old riddle. According to published statistics, about half the people who hear this for the first time cannot work out who the surgeon might be. It is because of long established and frequently reinforced stereotypes, that lead us to assume that a ‘surgeon’ must be male.

At KES, we are absolutely focused on educating our pupils, and ourselves, on the dangers of assumed stereotypes and biases. We want every young person at our school, regardless of gender, to feel able to follow the path and study the subjects that suit them best. As Head I am extremely proud of the focused work being done in academic departments and by pastoral leaders to promote equal access and equality for all of our pupils. I am proud of our open and very public stance against prejudice and discrimination in all forms. I am proud that we already buck the trend for girls (and boys) choosing to take GCSEs and A Levels sometimes wrongly associated with a particular gender. However, we absolutely do not believe that we have done all that we can on this score.

Therefore, I was delighted recently to be given the opportunity to apply for KES to be recognised as an official supporter of Gender Action, an organisation seeking to promote gender equality and best practice in schools across the country. Upon our acceptance, KES became the first independent school in our entire region to make this commitment. But making a pledge is only a start – we now intend to honour our promise and continue our work towards being a school and community that plays a pivotal role in helping to promote a truly equal society.

You can read more about the efforts being made to promote gender equality by the school here.
