An invitation to get involved

Have you ever been to Tokyo? I haven’t, truth be told, but I plan to be part of the staff team setting off for Japan this week, hoping to arrive in time for the delayed Olympics this Summer.

Of course – not really. There is no doubt whatsoever that such an adventure would very much go against the rules rightly in place to stay at home, and to remain near to your home for all daily exercise.

But I will be setting off ‘virtually’, as part of a new KES challenge for our whole School community (pupils, staff and parents) to log any distances covered when taking exercise and to see how far we can collectively travel across the globe in the coming weeks. I am hoping that this will help me to keep vaguely fit during lockdown, but also give me a connection with the whole KES community during this period when we are apart. It goes without saying that I will also be firmly rooting for ‘Team Staff’ on the challenge, although I suspect that as the team with the fewest available members, we may well end up lagging behind! But the gauntlet is nonetheless laid down from me to you all!

The Tokyo challenge is just one way to stay in touch and have some fun during this difficult time. We have also launched a wide range of lockdown co-curricular clubs for the pupils, which can be accessed here, as well as Wellness Activities for the whole family. These will be communicated to parents and pupils, and we’ll be sharing images and videos from pupils on our social media pages – so please connect and join in! During lockdown these little extras are so important for us all, and I would urge your child to try some of the available clubs, or to join the fitness sessions being put on by our PE staff, or to participate in a wellness challenge or two. For the family activities, why not get involved yourself!

After all, you surely wouldn’t want our staff to beat our parents to Tokyo, would you?

“Sayōnara!”

Race To Tokyo

As mentioned in Mr Parker's notice above, the KES Sports Department have organised a 'Race To Tokyo' Challenge.

We would like all members of the KES community to record any distances covered as part of an exercise session to see whether we can cumulatively make it to Tokyo. Of course, there needs to be a bit of competition so we will be seeing whether the staff, the parents or the students cover the most distance and also which student year group makes the biggest contribution.

For more information on the challenge, how to calculate and submit your distances and to view the distance reached so far click here. More information will be sent to students on Monday.

Lockdown Wellbeing

With our pupils, parents, community and staff facing another Lockdown, we want to provide some much needed escapism.

We promise there will be no Zoom quizzes, just a series of fun activities for the whole family to get involved in. We'll be providing some healthy competition, laughs, creativity and some practical advice to keep our community healthy and well.

The first challenge is Dine With Me.

So we can’t take all the credit for this challenge – it’s based on the popular Channel 4 show, Come Dine With Me. But we’ve cleverly removed the first word, as during the Lockdown we can’t go and dine with anyone!

Lockdown has undoubtedly been hard on our parents. Amongst other things, they’ve added classmate to their long list of roles and we would like our students to give back to them. So for this challenge, we’re encouraging students to plan and execute a meal for their family. Whether you go full on Cordon Bleu or just serve a good old pesto pasta – it doesn’t matter.

While we can’t sample the food, we’d love to see images of the dishes and/or your family enjoying it! Students will be sent a task via Firefly, with details of the google classroom where they can upload images/ videos of their meals.

All photos or videos submitted for this challenge will be handled in accordance with the School’s Privacy Notice here, and treated as per images/video taken in School.

Make sure to keep an eye on our social media pages for updates and images.
