Game Over - a KES Movie Production

Firstly, a warm welcome back to the Summer Term… and the sun has indeed been shining warmly on us all this week, making for a wonderful atmosphere around the school. This term will no doubt remain challenging, and for many it will include the assessments for GCSE and A Level examinations. But we are also determined to make it joyous and fun: a celebration of KES life to end the school year.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of spending some time enjoying the extraordinary creative talents of the students and staff in our drama department, as they rehearsed and recorded a filmed production of ‘Game Over’ by Mark Wheeler. For those parents who attended the on-line internet safety lecture by Lorin La Fave last term, the play’s themes will be sadly familiar, as it tells of the awful events that engulfed Lorin’s son, Breck. It is an emotional and powerful piece of art, born out of the most desperate of circumstances. For me, it was a moving experience to be invited to see our actors, teachers and technicians bringing Breck and Lorin’s heart-rending story so vividly to life. But it was also wonderful to see such artistic innovation on display at our school, in an entirely new approach to KES drama - a hybrid production partly born out of the familiar traditions of live theatre, and equally founded upon the distinctly different skills of filmed TV drama. I know that every participant will have learned a huge amount from their involvement, and I am looking forward to seeing (and us sharing with you) the end result when it is ‘in the can’.

Both Sailing and Paddleboarding are now full for this Half Term. Please do not turn up at SWAC unless you have had a confirmation email.

More places will be available next Half Term. For more information please refer to the notice in this Bulletin

Sport Kit in Summer Term

Please note that in the Summer Term, when pupils are in sports kit throughout the day, they must wear the school’s compulsory tracksuit bottoms on top of their skorts/shorts. Bare legs are not acceptable, outside of sporting activities, and leggings will be too warm for summer sports. Wearing tracksuit bottoms over skorts/shorts allows for quick changes so as to minimise time loss.

Tracksuits can be obtained from Stevensons or OBNO. As ever, OBNO would be grateful for donations of clean, ‘not-outworn’ kit, and sports kit is always in demand. More information can be found here

Operation Wallacea: Borneo (Summer 2022)

We have managed to increase the number of places available for the trip to Borneo next summer as at present government guidelines only allow planning for trips that are already in place. This is a two week expedition working on conservation projects on the island of Borneo, visiting protected biological sites and working alongside leading scientists. The first week focuses on the conservation of primates in lowland forests and the second week involves diving or snorkelling on the spectacular, and protected, coral reef around nearby Derawan Island (full training to PADI SCUBA qualification is included). There will be an information evening by Zoom at 6pm on Wednesday 28 April 2021. To register your interest and access the event, click here, and for more information about the trip click here. A link to a recording of the presentation will be available for those unable to attend.
