End of Year Exams

I know that end of year exams are not necessarily top of the list of ‘best things about school’ for our pupils, but today I want to sing their praises just a little bit.

The summer exam season teaches a set of skills that cannot really be experienced by any other means. Of most importance is the skill of academic multi-tasking. Of course, our pupils have shorter tests in their subjects throughout the year, so that teachers can check that the latest unit of learning has become embedded and is thoroughly understood. These informal tests of knowledge retention are critical for pupil progress and confidence building. But only through the end of year exam season can pupils learn to deal with multiple papers all following in close succession – a unique pressure that must be mastered in order to flourish in a GCSE or A Level year. Our summer term exams allow the pupils to succeed – and indeed occasionally to fail – in this multiple examination approach whilst the stakes remain relatively low. Better to do so before GCSEs, than during GCSEs!

Of course, due to the pandemic last year’s end of year exams were not possible, and even this year they have had to be reduced for the younger year groups. Nonetheless, they remain a key building block towards success in public exams. Perhaps our pupils should celebrate them accordingly – or at the very least begrudgingly try to use them wisely by embracing the challenge wholeheartedly, and see them as way of demonstrating their growing and flourishing skills. Good luck to them all in the coming days, and remember: ‘Preparation is the key to success.’ (Alexander Graham Bell)
