Have a wonderful summer!

Well – we have reached the end of the school year, and what a year it has been. I suspect that none of us entirely anticipated the levels of challenge that would be faced by our pupils, staff and parents over such a long period of time. That we ended with a spectacular final flourish of Activities Week, Sports Day, the Summer Concert and Endeavour speaks volumes about the resilience and determination of everybody at KES to grasp opportunities and maximise experiences, come what may. I cannot end this school year without thanking my colleagues, our brilliant pupils, and the whole KES parent community for your passion and commitment to King Edward’s, and for your endless energy and enthusiasm for teaching and learning over this past year. It has made a potentially difficult year really quite inspirational. Thank you.

Of course, just this week we have received notification from the Department for Education that next term will, in most respects, return to normality. This is exceptionally good news. Nonetheless, there are many details that now need to be implemented, and the stated requirement that we will begin the academic year with testing for all pupils (much as we did the Spring Term) will need to be converted in to a workable scheme. For this reason, please can parents (and pupils!) anticipate and read a letter that I will send out in August, which will outline and confirm full and comprehensive start of term arrangements for September.

In the meantime, enjoy this holiday with your loved ones. The children have earned their break more than they have ever done before. Have a wonderful summer!

The PTA would like to sincerely thank the parent volunteers who are leaving the school this year. Your hard work and support over the years has been very much appreciated by both the PTA and the school. We wish you and your children all the best.

Sport Details For The Next Academic Year

The Sports Department would like to thank all students and parents who have been involved in sport this year, and for making so much of the limited opportunities that have been available. We are now looking forward to what will, hopefully, be a much more ‘normal’ sporting year. To help parents with planning, we are pleased to share the below links, with further information.

The six Houses compete annually for the Allen Grant Trophy, which is awarded to the House that has scored the most points during the year in a series of academic, sporting and cultural competitions. Congratulations to all pupils that have contributed to their House points.

Endeavour 2021

Last week the whole school came off-timetable to participate in the annual Endeavour programme. The activities for each year group were based around a differing area of personal development, and offered each students an opportunity to try something new, challenge themselves or partake in some fun!

Below we have detailed the various activities and trips that took place over the two days, and supplied links to images taken during each activity.

The First Years had a fantastic time at Fairthorne Manor Activity Centre where they worked on their ‘independence’ by participating in a range of team-building activities. These included water sports and high ropes.

The Second Years developed their ‘confidence’, either with their culinary skills on a cookery workshop, on the water at Poole Watersports Academy, of heights by climbing in the Peak District, behind the lens on a photography course, in their film-making abilities on a film workshop or in their musical talents creating a music video.

The Third Years worked on their ‘collaboration’. Some travelled to Blenheim Woods for a two-day Bushcraft residential, others took part in climbing, archery and kayaking at Woodmill and a group of keen sailors spent two days sailing and paddleboarding at SWAC. Some joined the Second Years in the music workshop and others spent their time completing The Dragons’ Apprentice.

Fourth Year pupils either took part in The Dragons' Apprentice, or participated in Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions – a change from the usual ‘community’ focus due to fact that we were unable to welcome our partnership schools this year.

Sixth Formers chose from a range of options working on their ‘self-development’. Our biologists travelled to Leeson House for their annual Biology field trip whilst others worked on science, art or EPQ projects. A small group travelled to Bristol to The Wave centre where they were able to learn to surf.

All in all, the two days were filled with sunshine, activity, learning and fun – the perfect way to end the penultimate week of the Summer Term. During the events, teachers and members of staff have been snap happy, and we've collected all the images from the two-days in a central place on the school's Intranet.

Parents and students can see all the images here. Once you have clicked the link, please use the navigation menu to the left to view the images from each of the trips.

Romsey Abbey Concert

During lunchtime yesterday, musicians across different year groups performed a lunchtime concert that had audiences enraptured. And what better venue to showcase musical talent than at the beautiful Romsey Abbey! The concert included a taster of the A Level recital programme that Sixth Former Adam is preparing, alongside a variety of solos from trombone, oboe, violin, cello and voice.

The performers impressed so much, KES was asked back again next year to showcase more stars of the future. Huge congratulations to all that took part!

Les Misérables Production

This November, we’ll be sharing the grit and heartbreak of the beloved Les Misérables with a sterling cast of individuals. Get a taste of the drama hitting the Dobson Theatre, in the promo below.

It’s only “one ‘term’ more” until ticket information will be announced!
