Records of the War 1914-18

C.F. Russell (1940) in his 'A History of  King Edward VI School Southampton'  writes: -

'During the War of 1914-18 it was scarcely possible at any school to keep a list of old boys who were serving in the forces of the Crown, with any certainty that it was complete.  Many must have fought without any information of the fact being conveyed to the school authorities either by themselves or their relations, and for King Edward's School the total number was no doubt larger than that of the names that were known.  Of these there were about four hundred and fifty Old Edwardians who were numbered among those who "for their country's sake and for our sakes loved not their lives unto death". 

G.T Darby (2004) in his 'History of the School' writes: -

"As far as we know 400 OE's served in the First World War; one master and 49 old boys died in the service of their country.  Their memorial which was unveiled in 1923 can be seen in the Commemoration Room.

Utilising the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website it has been possible to identify the age and date of death of a number of OE's (research is on-going for the rest).  Some have been easier to identify than others.  In addition the CWGC website has now produced a Commemorative Certificate for each individual and these have been linked in the table below.  Additional documentation is also available via the same link for 'grave registration' (i.e. place of burial) and 'headstone' details.
