Pre-Reading for 6th Form – Chemistry

It is important to understand the fundamentals covered in IGCSE and GCSE before moving onto A-level Chemistry. The step up can be quite daunting, but if you have a solid knowledge as you start in September, it will make a huge difference moving forward. This is particularly true for your understanding of moles.

You will be sent a copy of ‘Head Start to A-level Chemistry’ – this a good CGP guide that goes over the basics. You should aim to read through and complete the questions in the following sections at least.

  • Section 1 – The Structure of the Atom
  • Section 2 – Formation of Ions
  • Section 4 – Bonding & Properties
  • Section 5 – Chemical Equations
  • Section 11 – Calculations

The answers can be found in the back of the book so you can mark your own work. Please keep a copy to show your teacher at the beginning of the year.

You can work through more sections if you like, and it will certainly prove useful to read ahead as the year progresses.

You will also be sent the following documents that you should look to complete by the end of the holidays. Again, be prepared to show your teacher the work you have done in your first lesson back.
